Gamelan : dans les dictionnaires

Le Grand Larousse en 5 volumes
1987

GAMELAN n. m. (javanais gamel, instrument). Ensemble instrumental indonésien comprenant des percussions mélodiques en bronze (gongs suspendus) ou en bois (xylophone), des tambours ainsi que des instruments à cordes pincées ou frottées, des flûtes et des chanteurs.
Translation :
Indonesian instrumental ensemble comprising melodic percussions in bronze (hanging gongs) or in wood (xylophone), drums as well as plucked or bowed string instruments, flutes and vocalists.

Our observations

Bravo for the use of the words percussions mélodiques. But the gongs are not the only bronze instruments : the metallophones are typical melodic percussions also. Besides, there is no mention of a yet common third material: bamboo. Whereas there is not one word about cymbals, the end of this definition lingers on elements not relevant to gamelan.
Actually, this description reminds us particularly of a certain type of Javanese gamelan : the xylophone in question is the gambang, the plucked string instruments are the clempung, etc.
