Javanese gamelan : group workshops

Saturday morning

The workshops are done on the gamelan Kyai Gandrung and organized by the Ateliers d'Ethnomusicologie de Genève and the museum. Our musical knowledge has been given to us by two Javanese musicians :

  • Francescus Xavierus Suhardi Djojoprasetjo, from The Hague, Holland
  • Ki Dalang Sri Joko Wiyono, from Surakarta. He lives at present in Geneva.

Our training is provided by Alek Jeanson.

These workshops are free, although participants are encouraged to subscribe to the Ethnomusicology Workshops (50 francs per year).

We learn a traditional repertoire of Java's center, in the genre of gending bonang, comprising the compositions

    The workshops are done on the gamelan Tarangga Kañcana and organized by Alek Jeanson. We don't yet use kendang, réyong or suling. Our musical knowledge is being given to us by

    • Takahiro Oguchi, from Yokohama where they have a group on gong kebyar.

    Individual lessons

    We give individual lessons from level zero. In one individual lesson, sometimes more, you are ready for group work on either gamelan (Balinese or Javanese) or both. No musical knowledge, theoretical or practical, is necessary for subscription.

    These courses are 30 francs per hour.

    The lessons focus on the technical aspect and repetition of exercises. The participant chooses one or several instruments for work.
