Finding a gamelan in a European city is not common (in the countryside neither, for that matter). The person interested in traditional music will come across instruments of Brazilian samba, African djembes or Indian sitars before coming upon a gamelan. He may not even know what is a gamelan.
The best known musical traditions come from the African and American continents. Europe and the Middle East are known for their multiple local traditions. In Asia, it is the music of the Chinese and Indian worlds but not gamelan.
Geneva and its wonderful ethnographic museum, as well as its Ethnomusicology Workshops, have the merit of filling this gap and confirm again the international character of this city.
Do come to play of it. |
